We’re excited to introduce two incredible consultants who’ve recently joined the Evolve team — Kathy Slaughter and Amy Peebles. Both bring years of leadership experience, deep fundraising expertise, and a passion for helping organizations grow and thrive.
We sat down with them for a quick Q&A to learn what advice they have for nonprofit leaders, their proudest accomplishments, and what they enjoy outside of work.

Q: You were at YWCA for nearly 15 years in development leadership. What is your proudest accomplishment in that role?
A: Although development is a team sport, I was really proud of the work that I did on our capital campaign. I led the team that raised $19M, exceeding our goal of $18.5M.
Q: What do clients love about working with you?
A: I think donors and clients appreciate that I’m authentic, detail oriented, and responsive.
Q: What are some of the common mistakes you see from development teams?
A: Common mistakes I've seen are nonprofits that don't have major gift programs because they are intimidated and afraid to ask, as well as nonprofits that don't solicit planned gifts. I believe that you just have to jump in and start asking. If you know your donors, understand why they give, and can tell a good story about your mission and impact, then you can do major gifts.
Q: What do you enjoy outside of work?
A: I enjoy strength training, walking along Lake Michigan, and traveling. I'm also in a great book club, so I do a lot of reading as well.

Q: You served as Executive Director of the Alpha Phi Foundation for nearly 7 years. What was your proudest accomplishment in that role?
A: During my time at Alpha Phi Foundation, we went through the pandemic, concluded a $43.5M comprehensive campaign, and transitioned to a totally remote organization. I’m really proud of the leadership role I played through all that and the success we had.
Q: You’ve held a variety of fundraising, strategy, and leadership roles throughout your career. How does your background prepare you to help nonprofits succeed?
A: I understand how organizations work and I bring a big picture perspective; I’ve literally worked in every operational department. With my expertise in executive leadership, finance, board development, and strategic planning, I help organizations understand what kinds of problems they need to solve and how everything is connected.
Q: What makes a great nonprofit leader?
A: Leadership is about listening, knowing you’re not the smartest person in the room, and asking questions. Your relationship with the board is also crucial; you have to understand that they’re coming from a very different perspective and meet them where they’re at.
Q: What do you love to do outside of work?
A: I enjoy traveling, reading, and spending time with my family.
