Overview

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) provides vision and voice to build strong communities that, together, transform the way people connect to Judaism and change the world. Through camping, youth experiences, programs, information sharing, and networking opportunities, over 850 congregations and 15 residential camps create opportunities for the URJ to enhance their capacity to build and expand community, engage in meaningful and authentic Jewish life, deepen Jewish learning, energize worship, pursue social justice, and develop inspired leadership.

The URJ seeks a dynamic and passionate West Coast Camps Development Director to oversee fundraising activities for Camp Newman, Camp Kalsman, and 6 Points West. Reporting to the Executive Director of URJ Youth and Camping West, overseeing several development managers, and working in partnership with lay leadership, the Development Director will play a key role in creating and implementing year-round and large-scale capital development initiatives to sustain and grow the camps, including the retreat and conference centers, innovative academic year programming, and the excellence of core camp programs.

The ideal candidate brings a minimum of 5-7 years of proven relevant experience with a significant focus on fundraising, strong relationship building skills, an excellent ability to create and execute, and a sophisticated understanding of the impact and unique value of overnight immersive experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify potential donors; develop strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Develop a variety of strategies to expand the current donor base
  • Lead the planning, organization and implementation of fundraising activities and special events including camp celebrations, stakeholder events, direct mail, cultivation, and solicitation visits
  • Maintain and build existing foundation and community partner relationships and identify new opportunities for partnership and support
  • Oversee grant research, writing, and reporting; focus on expanding current and prospective foundation relationships
  • Work in close partnership with the West Coast Camp Advisory Committees fostering and supporting their engagement in fundraising
  • Oversee alumni activities, including special events and other ways to engage alumni throughout the year
  • In partnership with the development managers and support team, ensure the maintenance of accurate donor records and communications, as well as the execution of administrative tasks
  • Write and prepare materials needed for development-related communications including newsletters, e-mails, appeals and campaign materials, and donor recognition
  • Generate pledge reminders and all needed reports for donors, committees, foundations, etc.; provide regular reports on fundraising activities as needed

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5-7+ years of fundraising experience
  • Comfort working with high-level donors; successful track record of soliciting five and six figure gifts
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Talent for leading and empowering team members and volunteers
  • Ability to inspire others through relationships, storytelling, community, and connections
  • Comfort working independently, with a team player mindset
  • Deep knowledge of the Jewish philanthropic community
  • Passion for the mission of URJ and overnight camping; ability to promote and communicate mission and impact to stakeholders
  • Advanced CRM software skills, Salesforce experienced preferred
  • Willingness to spend a significant amount of time at the camps in the summer and travel to donor meetings and conferences as needed
  • Demonstrated experience in prioritizing and executing on racial equity, diversity, and inclusion
