Since 1949, the Stroum Jewish Community Center (SJCC)’s vision has been to serve as the Puget Sound’s most open and welcoming community-centered Jewish organization. SJCC provides a variety of engaging offerings to enrich the lives of Jewish and general community members at all life cycle stages.

SJCC seeks a strategic and skilled Chief Development Officer (CDO) who will work across the organization to elevate all development efforts, infusing a culture of philanthropy and building collaborative and synergistic approaches to financial health and sustainability. This senior managerial position will oversee SJCC’s goal of growing annual philanthropic revenue to $5 million by harnessing untapped philanthropic potential throughout the community. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CDO will serve as a key public face of the SJCC, projecting an inspiring fundraising narrative to draw stakeholders closer to its vision, impact, and future direction.

Strong candidates will bring 7+ years of proven success soliciting 6 and 7 figure gifts, building relationships with key stakeholders, managing comprehensive fundraising initiatives, team management expertise, sound leadership judgment, and the ability to promote an organization-wide culture of philanthropy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement a complex strategic 3-5 year fundraising plan, including development department budget
  • Develop strategies to expand existing donor base while continually building out new individual and institutional prospect pipelines
  • Actively solicit a robust personal donor portfolio, including 6 and 7 figure asks
  • Manage all stages of identification, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, ongoing stewardship, and gift processing/reporting (with accounting team)
  • Oversee and empower expanding development team, including professionals and volunteers; create their individual solicitation portfolios, prepare them to solicit, and promote their professional development and growth
  • Guide entire development team in building strong and mutually beneficial relationships with SJCC staff, external donors, members, volunteers, and business and community leaders
  • Develop and implement personalized cultivation and solicitation strategies based on donor passions and in alignment with SJCC priorities and vision
  • In collaboration with marketing team, provide strategic direction for creation of comprehensive advancement communications plan
  • Facilitate all development-related priority setting, time management, execution of tasks, and interdepartmental coordination
  • Participate in major institutional decision-making as directed by CEO and board

Qualifications & Skills

  • 7+ years of experience in major gifts roles (6 and 7 figure solicitations)
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating and soliciting major donors
  • Substantial knowledge of and ability to impart development best practices
  • Passion for the mission of SJCC; ability to compellingly articulate it
  • Capability to inform, motivate, and inspire colleagues and supporters
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; sophisticated interpersonal skills 
  • Significant supervisory experience; ability to provide timely feedback
  • Aptitude for identifying innovative and creative approaches to challenges and growth opportunities
  • Skilled in building authentic relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Experience developing qualitative and quantitative measures to track development impact
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office Suite; Bloomerang or Qgiv experience a plus
  • Familiarity with Jewish culture, customs, and practices preferred
