Overview

The Opportunity

Since 1965, The Jewish Federation of Orange County (JFOC) has been and continues to be an integral organization to the Jewish community of Orange County, sustaining and enhancing Jewish life for the Jewish community (roughly 90,000 people) and supporting programs for Jewish communities locally and around the world. With engaged leadership and committed professional support, the CEO position is a unique opportunity for a charismatic and visionary fundraiser and leader to build upon a successful foundation to move the community forward.

JFOC raises funds to support programs and initiatives both locally, in Israel and for Jewish communities overseas. Raising $5M annually, the federation allocates raised funds in 4 focus areas: Israel, Overseas & National Partners; Caring for Those in Need; Community Relations & Combating Anti-Semitism and Jewish Engagement and Community Building. Jewish Federation of Orange County leverages its resources to enhance and sustain Jewish life, assists people in need, mobilizes on issues of concern to the local Jewish community, and strengthens the bond with Israel and Jewish people globally. Working together with its partners, JFOC is the Jewish philanthropic engagement point for a growing donor base.

The Position

The leadership of JFOC seek to hire a CEO with successful fundraising and executive management experience who has a vision for Jewish life and community in Orange County. The President/CEO reports to the chair of the board and is accountable to the Board of Directors and its executive committee. The Federation currently has 17 professional staff members who work together to achieve the federation’s programmatic, engagement and fundraising goals.

Successful candidates will understand the complex nature of multi-channel and major gifts fundraising, understand the nuances of Jewish communal trends, thrive in key stakeholder engagement and appreciate the unique nature and attributes of the Orange County Jewish community.  

The CEO will grow a culture of philanthropy at the Federation, engaging donors and funders, deepening ties with current and prospective donors, community foundations, and multi-generational families who have been the historical foundation of JFOC’s support. They will have the capacity to develop, grow and steward a portfolio of local, national, and international donors and funders. As a results-driven leader, the successful candidate will have a proven track record of successful supervision of professional staff, encouraging all to do their part to continue to improve and grow JFOC.

Key Responsibilities

 Executive Leadership and Vision:

  • Building on JFOC’s strong foundation, articulate a vision, message and direction that engages and energizes the entire Jewish community.
  • Enhance Federation’s ability to convene community (agencies, funders, synagogues, and key stakeholders) around issues of concern and action in Orange County,  positioning the Federation as a facilitator of strategic partnerships.
  • Increase the Federation’s visibility and expand the community’s understanding of Federation’s mission and services as well as enhance its reputation as a partner in philanthropy and service. 
  • Set, foster, and model a positive and collaborative environment within the organization to engage the JFOC professional team as well as recruit and retain top talent.
  • Serve as the face and voice of the Federation throughout the Jewish and greater OC community, inspire engagement, participation and commitment from new and current lay leaders, donors and stakeholders.

Resource Development:

  • Develop and implement a vision for strategic philanthropy, as well as annual and special campaigns.  
  • As the lead development professional for the Federation, personally solicit and steward donors to engage/re-engage new and former donors to the campaign.   
  • Lead the professional team responsible for planning financial resource development with emphasis on the development of strategies to work effectively with existing as well as new major donors. 
  • Motivate and train both lay leaders and professionals in their fundraising efforts. 


Organizational Management:

  • Lead, motivate and supervise the Federation staff, creating a culture of collaboration, creativity, innovation, and best-in-class operations.  Provide ongoing supervision, mentoring, professional development and growth to Federation staff.
  • Serve as the chief professional officer responsible for overseeing and managing organizational budget development, planning & evaluation, financial resource development, administration, and fiscal accountability.
  • Serve as professional advisor and resource to the Board in all areas of program, finance and agency policy and governance. 
  • Partner with the Board Chair to recruit and  maintain relationships with top lay leadership, leadership prospects and donors to cultivate lay and professional leadership of the Federation. 
  • Work closely with lay leadership and professionals responsible for finance, evaluation and planning to ensure that goals and outcomes are achieved and to ensure strong fiscal management.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Executive experience in an organization or agency comparable to the Federation in either size or complexity. 
  • A proven track record of fundraising and the capacity to build trusting relationships with donors and their families; an understanding of Federation campaigns, donor stewardship campaign growth and a commitment to annual giving.
  • An experienced manager, able to build and lead a comprehensive professional team.
  • An open, accessible and accountable leadership style and approach; showing sensitivity to all viewpoints. 
  • Substantive experience and/or skills necessary to work closely with a Board as an advisor and partner. 
  • Compelling and effective oral and written communication skills for both lay and professional constituencies, clearly articulating the case for Federation; showcasing active listening and sensitivity to the ideas and concerns of others.
  • A deep understanding of fiscal oversight, finance and fiduciary responsibility. 
  • Successful experience in leading a complex organization that operates within an ever-changing environment. 
  • Ability to partner with and engage professional and volunteer leaders of community agencies, synagogues, institutions and organizations. 
  • Personal commitment to and passion for Jewish life and the values of the Jewish community, Jewish identity and Israel.  
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
