Overview

Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School is a dynamic, transitional kindergarten through eighth grade educational community grounded in Jewish values. Heschel is a pluralistic Jewish school comprised of families who observe Judaism on many different levels. Students are offered diverse opportunities for growth in a secure, positive environment with the resources to emerge as active citizens poised to make a difference in the world. Students, staff, parents/grandparents, and alumni generate the warmth and excitement that define Heschel and promote a lifelong love of learning. Heschel is a deep-rooted, dedicated community, with over 70 current students of alumni parents, a history of 100% fundraising participation among families, and successful capital and endowment campaigns.

Heschel seeks a self-driven Director of Development to promote and support the school’s mission and achieve a $1 million - $1.5 million annual fundraising goal. This position will lead Heschel’s comprehensive, strategic fundraising efforts and develop close relationships and rapport with the school community. As a management level, core member of the administrative team, this position reports to and partners closely with the Head of School, helping to shape a vision of philanthropic growth. The ideal candidate is a sophisticated fundraising generalist, preferably with experience in day school and/or Jewish organizational settings. Grant research and grant writing experience is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a comprehensive fundraising program to include goals and objectives, strategies, programs, and activities
  • Plan and oversee the full fundraising calendar of activities, including annual campaign, designated gifts, endowment, and capital projects; oversee all solicitation and recognition
  • Personally steward and solicit donors, and coordinate solicitation plans for the Head of School and lay solicitors
  • Collaborate on the full range of development activities with the Head of School, Board members, faculty, administrative staff, and Parent Organization
  • Oversee the strategy and planning for Spring Gala and all fundraising events
  • Manage the grants process at all stages: proposals, follow up, and evaluation
  • Liaise with Business Office team on accounting for pledges, gift acceptance and donor recognition procedures, and maintenance of development budgets
  • Drive all fundraising-related communications, including grant writing and reporting, annual report, school newsletters, and donor thank you notes
  • Assist with electronic messaging, including digital media, public/media relations, website content, and other advertising
  • Steer the alumni engagement program, including reunions, fundraising outreach, and alumni database
  • Staff the Board Development Committee; present updates to Board on fundraising goals, benchmarks, and achievements as needed
  • Represent and strengthen the culture of giving within the Heschel community

Qualifications & Skills

  • 5-7 years professional fundraising and/or managerial experience
  • Passion for Jewish education and continuity and the mission of Heschel
  • Proven ability to secure gifts of $5,000+ from existing and prospective donors
  • Skill in developing relationships with lay leadership and motivating volunteers to participate in fundraising
  • Understanding of the greater Los Angeles Jewish philanthropic landscape; ideally, specific knowledge of the San Fernando Valley Jewish community
  • Knowledge of current nonprofit development trends and best practices
  • Project management expertise, with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and meet deadlines
  • Experience planning and executing fundraising events
  • High level of comfort with technology; experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized and efficient

  • Creative thinker and problem solver
  • Ability to forge relationships and build rapport with diverse constituencies
  • Discretion in the handling of sensitive donor and prospect information
  • Comfort working in a school setting during school hours and year-round
