Overview

Chicago Voyagers empowers low-income  youth of color  through clinically informed, academically driven outdoor adventure programs, including cycling, canoeing, hiking, and rock climbing. Founded in 2008 as a Trips for Kids affiliate, the organization expanded on the Midwest chapter’s mission by offering a broader range of activities designed to foster personal growth and resilience. Through partnerships with organizations such as North Chicago Community High School, Mercy Home, and Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club, Chicago Voyagers helps teens build confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of personal responsibility. 

Chicago Voyagers is seeking a visionary, mission-driven Executive Director with a strong background in nonprofit management, fundraising, and strategic growth. Responsible for advancing the organization’s adventure-based youth programs, the Executive Director will oversee daily operations, ensure financial and legal compliance, and guide the organization through its next phase of expansion. Successful candidates will bring proven experience in organizational leadership, team development, and community engagement, along with a deep commitment to empowering underserved youth. Exceptional communication skills, fundraising success, and a passion for experiential outdoor programming, while not required, are strong assets for success in this role; familiarity with adventure therapy is also a plus.

Compensation Range

$125,000 - $150,000

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic planning with the Board and staff to advance mission and growth
  • Partner with the Director of Development and Board to lead fundraising and communications strategies that meet or exceed annual goals 
  • Lead with a focus on building an inclusive, high-performing team by applying thoughtful and strategic talent management practices
  • Ensure financial health through budgeting, oversight, and compliance
  • Promote operational excellence by establishing efficient systems, policies, and procedures that support organizational growth and accountability
  • Strengthen partnerships to expand reach and program impact
  • Cultivate and steward meaningful relationships with donors, foundations, and community partners to sustain and grow financial support
  • Serve as the organization’s primary ambassador, effectively communicating the mission and elevating the profile of Chicago Voyagers among key stakeholders
  • Oversee impactful youth programs aligned with mission and community needs

Qualifications & Skills

  • Passion for and alignment with the mission and vision of Chicago Voyagers
  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Nonprofit Management, Business, or related field preferred
  • Proven track record of nonprofit leadership, with experience in fundraising, revenue management, and organizational growth
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing strategic, impact-driven plans
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting and oversight in a nonprofit setting
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Experience in organizations serving diverse, underserved youth preferred
  • Knowledge of or interest in adventure therapy or outdoor programs is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Donor Perfect, QuickBooks, and Monday.com, with the ability to quickly learn and adopt new technologies
