Overview

Founded in 1985, the Chicago Abortion Fund (CAF) supports people accessing abortion care across the Midwest and nation by providing financial, emotional, and logistical support. In addition to its direct service work, CAF builds power through organizing and research.  

The Chicago Abortion Fund seeks a passionate and skilled Director of Development who can build upon and enhance its existing development strategy for a rapidly growing $6 million+ organizational operating budget. Reporting to the Executive Director, this individual will be a natural relationship builder and team player who thrives on deepening connections and is enthusiastic about sustaining CAF’s vision. Successful candidates will demonstrate success in nonprofit development, will work well independently and collaboratively, possess strong organizational skills, and have a passion for moving Human and Reproductive Rights forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Spearhead and oversee all aspects of CAF’s comprehensive annual development efforts in alignment with organizational budget and goals
  • Own the “big picture” vision for fundraising strategy and growth while playing an active day-to-day role in donor-facing work and development functions
  • Cultivate a proactive and influential approach to managing relationships with superiors, peers, and cross-functional teams to drive project execution
  • Build, lead, and grow the development team of 2 to achieve organizational and departmental goals
  • Maintain a donor portfolio of 80-100 major donors ($10,000+) and high-level prospects
  • Analyze and understand the existing donor base while building strategies for reaching additional individuals and institutional funding in the Chicago area and beyond
  • Provide experience and feedback on best practices across multiple development functions, i.e., direct mail, endowment fundraising, donor-advised funds, and online fundraising campaigns (peer-to-peer), etc.
  • Engage and inspire the Board of Directors to serve as ambassadors for CAF and play an expanding role in development
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to manage a substantial portfolio of donors and conduct face-to-face solicitations of new, renewed, and increased gifts to grow CAF’s base of support
  • Partner with the Executive Director and appropriate staff on all stages of the donor cycle: prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Provide research, strategy, and preparation materials for Executive Director’s donor engagements; assist with follow-up and ongoing stewardship
  • Launch new donor engagement programs and events to bring current and future supporters closer to CAF’s vision, work, and impact
  • Oversee development-related events, including formal fundraising activities, as well as relationship-building opportunities at year-round programs
  • Develop a deep understanding of integrated programs and be able to articulate fundraising priorities

Qualifications & Skills

  • 7+ years of nonprofit development experience (or relevant experience)
  • Commitment to and understanding of reproductive justice, and demonstrated experience supporting low-income communities and communities of color
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, creative, and able to work with a significant amount of autonomy, strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to focus on overarching goals while staying on point with detail-oriented tasks and initiatives
  • Aptitude for building relationships with diverse staff, board members, community members, and donors
  • High level of professionalism in handling sensitive and confidential information
  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail, ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-energy, and collaborative environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Willingness to work remotely, attending frequent in-person meetings and events; Work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
  • Working knowledge of data management software and online fundraising tools; experience with Salsa preferred
