Overview

A Safe Place is a leading advocate for the elimination and prevention of  domestic violence and human trafficking in northern Illinois. ASP provides multi-faceted programs and services to survivors that support their efforts to transform their lives after violence and trafficking through 24-hour support, intervention, and community education. ASP believes that our society must hold individuals responsible for their abusive behavior and strives to create a community where violence is not tolerated or hidden.

A Safe Place seeks an experienced nonprofit Controller with a strategic mindset; this individual is a skilled CPA who can oversee, manage, and implement all aspects of ASP’s fiscal management and accounting process. Reporting to the CEO, the Controller will have excellent project management skills, and the ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively with individuals throughout all levels of the organization.

Compensation Range

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage ASP’s $9 Million operating budget by developing, implementing,  and monitoring procedures and practices to ensure sound financial management.
  • Lead a financial staff of 4; plan, implement, measure, and ensure strong execution of all financial systems, processes, and reporting; supervise accounts payable; oversee income accounting and allocation practices.
  • Utilize systems to monitor procedures for data collection, ensuring accurate data entry activities and preparation of internal and external statistical reports for management and planning purposes.
  • Compile, produce, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to the CEO and the Board as organizational and federal guidelines dictate.
  • Prepare ASP annual budget, achieving objectives by scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective action and financial controls.
  • Provide financial management analysis and tools to provide perspective on maximizing revenue and controlling costs.
  • Keep the CEO and board apprised of risk management and insurance issues; recommend coverage levels and alternate vendors; Ensure appropriate specifications, acquisition plans, and procurement procedures through comparative bids and process and claims management.
  • Prepare studies regarding personnel cost, changes in salary scales, and other benefits; recommend alterations to personnel policy and procedures; update and distribute personnel policy manual based on ASP financial goals.
  • Collaborate with development and program staff to prepare a budget and financial materials for grant applications and reports. Ensure that ASP grant income and expenditures are accurately and appropriately tracked.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Passion for domestic violence and human trafficking issues as they align with ASP’s mission and values
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or related field; CPA required.
  • Experience with non-profit financial reporting and management; Expertise in GAAP Accounting, audits, and IRS returns.
  • High level of comfort working with business technology, including Microsoft Suite, QuickBooks, and Sage Intacct preferred.
  • Adept in developing and managing budgets with a cost-effective approach.
  • Project management expertise; ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Experience creating financial statements, general ledger functions, and the close year-end process.
  • Effective, motivational supervisory skills with the ability to lead in a team-oriented setting.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex financial information to non-professionals, the CEO, and Board Members.
