Overview

Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion is North America's leading  institution of higher Jewish education and the center for professional leadership  development of Reform Judaism. A multi-campus academic and spiritual learning  community, HUC-JIR builds vibrant progressive Judaism in North America, Israel  and around the globe. 

The New York City-based Director of Advancement will work in collaboration with the AVP, Institutional Advancement and colleagues across North America and Israel, to develop and maintain key donor and alumni relationships, create and implement fundraising and leadership development programs, and increase awareness of HUC-JIR among donors, prospects, and the broader community. The Director of Advancement will identify new philanthropic investors, secure major gifts, provide meaningful touchpoints for engagement and develop creative and effective programmatic activities together with fellow gift officers and HUC colleagues. Successful candidates will be experienced and passionate self-starters with the ability to work in a highly collegial manner within a complex, national and international organizational culture. Regular travel throughout the Eastern region, with flexibility and willingness to travel beyond the region.

Compensation Range

$130K-$160K

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and grow HUC-JIR's current donor base in the New York/Tri-state  region, with a focus on major and principal giving capacity 
  • Build and manage a portfolio of prospects to grow to 100+ individuals/families 
  • Create and implement appropriate cultivation and stewardship strategies for  new and existing donors 
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle, including identification,  engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Initiate contacts to qualify new, potential leadership, and major gift donors
  • Solicit gifts of $10,000 and above in support of HUC-JIR's priorities
  • Regularly qualify new prospects to determine their affinity for HUC-JIR's  mission and propensity to contribute at the major gift level 
  • Successfully complete 12-15 high-touch, curated, donor-centered  meetings/scheduled interactions each month 
  • Partner with staff and volunteer leadership, local alumni, and congregations  to identify new donors, implement fundraising strategies and constituency building programs, and coordinate VIP visits to the region 
  • Create customized proposals and presentations for major individual donors
  • Attend events related to Reform Judaism, Jewish professional leadership  development, Israel, and other relevant subject matters to network with  potential donors and partner organizations. 
  • Utilize the donor database (Raiser's Edge) to maintain accurate records of all  donor interactions, programmatic interests, trends in giving, and type of  support to solicit 
  • Travel nationally for professional staff institutes and other programs

Qualifications & Skills

  • 7+ years of fundraising experience  with a track record of closing six and seven-figure gifts 
  • Experience with multi-year pledges  and planned giving strategies a plus
  • Experience working in higher education a plus 
  • Experience working with volunteer/board leadership on prospect identification, cultivation  and solicitations 
  • Extensive knowledge of Jewish  philanthropy
  • Strong presence with outstanding relationship building skills 
  • Ability to inspire, influence and  build credibility with donors, lay leadership and staff
  • Proficiency working with donor  management software, Raiser’s Edge a plus 
  • Knowledge of the Reform Jewish  community and passion for the HUC-JIR mission 
  • Experience working with organizations in Israel is preferred
