Overview

The Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) is Reform Judaism’s rabbinic leadership organization. The CCAR strengthens the Jewish community by providing religious, spiritual, ethical, and intellectual leadership. CCAR and its members lead the Reform Movement on important spiritual, social, cultural and human rights issues, as it has done since 1889.

CCAR is also the center for lifelong rabbinic learning, professional development, and personal support for the 2,200 rabbis who serve more than 1.5 million Reform Jews throughout North America, Israel, and the world. Since its founding, the CCAR also has served as the primary publisher for the Reform Movement through CCAR Press and its secondary imprint Reform Judaism Publishing.

CCAR seeks an experienced Director of Advancement to partner with and support the Chief Executive in all areas of philanthropy. Overseeing the development department, the Director of Advancement ensures the growth and achievement of the organization’s $1M+ annual fundraising goal. This position reports to and collaborates closely with the Chief Executive, serving as a member of the senior team focused on guiding CCAR’s strategic fundraising efforts and operational objectives. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of relevant nonprofit fundraising and major gifts experience, preferably in a Jewish environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the CEO and Director of Development to achieve short and long-term fundraising goals
  • Partner with professional and volunteer leadership to develop and implement fundraising strategies, campaign plans, timelines and initiatives
  • Manage donor relationships; create and implement individualized solicitation, cultivation and stewardship plans; identify and cultivate a portfolio of prospective major donors, working in close collaboration with member rabbis
  • Oversee all fundraising communications and personalized donor communications on behalf of the Chief Executive
  • Supervise the work of a two-person development team, overseeing all fundraising activities and initiatives
  • Manage all foundation and grant work, including writing, editing, and research; oversee foundation relationships all related reporting
  • Identify new opportunities for foundation and institutional partnerships, building and maintaining relationships with funders and prospective funders
  • Work in partnership with board members and the Director of Development to build and develop a strong culture of philanthropy throughout the organization
  • Identify and cultivate prospective board members and volunteers; develop opportunities to engage board members in capacity building activities
  • Serve as an ambassador for and representative of CCAR in the community at all times

Qualifications & Skills

  • 10+ years professional fundraising experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Proven ability to secure gifts of $25,000+
  • Experience and comfort working with high-level donors, philanthropists and foundations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; highly organized
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and customer service skills
  • Skilled at developing relationships with lay leadership and donors and motivating volunteers to meet goals
  • Supervision and project management experience
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Jewish nonprofit and rabbinic community
  • Energetic team player with a positive attitude who can work as part of a team or independently
  • High level of comfort working with business technology including Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Salesforce preferred
  • Discretion and commitment to confidentiality
  • Ability to exercise patience and good judgement
