Chicago Jewish Day School (CJDS) is a multi-denominational Jewish day school that provides a standard of excellence in both Judaic and General Studies through an integrated, multi-sensory curriculum that is attentive to students' individual needs. Serving a community that is diverse and a reflection of the entire Chicagoland Jewish community, CJDS's students develop a passion for learning and a strong sense of themselves as Jews and as human beings. Located in Chicago's Irving Park neighborhood, CJDS currently serves over 230 students from JK-8th grade.

CJDS is seeking a Director of Institutional Advancement who will lead their development efforts including the creation and implementation of an overarching development strategy, the school's annual campaign and the conclusion of its second phase of a $10M capital campaign. Key focus areas include developing and cultivating prospects, coordinating major gift solicitations, developing fundraising communications, planning events, and integrating the Board of Trustees into the school's development efforts. The Director will also lead grant writing, endowment development, and legacy giving efforts. Successful candidates will be goal-oriented and proactive, with strong organizational and people management skills, demonstrated experience in donor relations and solicitation, and can manage multiple deadlines. Ideally, candidates will have familiarity with the Jewish day school environment and a passion for both Jewish communal fundraising and CJDS's mission.

Compensation Range

$95,000-$105,000

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with Head of School to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy 
  • Develop annual fundraising budget; monitor and track progress in coordination with the Business and Operations team 
  • Work in a close supervisory role with the Marketing & Communications Manager and Development Associate to create and execute compelling communication and development strategies 
  • Cultivate relationships with current donors, grow prospective donor relationships and meet with major donors
  • Partner with Board and lay leaders on fundraising planning and solicitation 
  • Identify key funding needs that lend themselves to grant support; identify new grant opportunities; manage writing, reporting, and occasional implementation of grants 
  • Partner with the Director of Business & Operations to ensure all fundraising operations are handled appropriately 
  • Build ongoing relationships with key stakeholders in the community, including regular meetings with CJDS’ development liaison from the Jewish United Fund
  • Provide opportunities for leadership development to board and volunteers
  • Identify and foster opportunities for partnership with local and national organizations

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising
  • Major gifts and grant writing experience highly preferred
  • Ability to create and manage annual campaign budgets
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects 
  • Familiarity with Jewish day school and/or Jewish communal fundraising highly preferred
  • Comfortable working both independently and on a team
  • Excellent donor relations and stewarding skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication and writing skills 
  • Commitment to the mission of Chicago Jewish Day School
  • Proficiency using MS Office; experience with Neon or similar donor databases highly preferred
  • Flexibility in working occasional nights and weekend hours
